The LindyChef meets a Master
Thank you, jobby job. Because I was out in California
that week I got a chance to go meet someone I am completely in awe of -
Alton Brown of Good Eats (see my On
Cooking page for more background info). I showed up at the
bookstore two hours early, big dorky fan that I am . . . nobody else was
there. I had enough time to drop into a pub next door and sip a
scotch on the rocks and have a beer, plus go to the Thai restaurant just
down the street for duck with red curry (and more booze).
So that took an hour. But the wait was worth it.
In came AB, exuding that same Good Eats personality that he does on
the small screen. Naturally I wasn't afraid to ask questions, so I
made sure to ask him why his pie crust recipie didn't work for me (it always
turned out tender, not tender and flaky - I didn't have the heart to tell
him I found one better at America's Test Kitchen). He did
compliment me on my kitchen clogs, though, as he gave a lively discussion of
the ins and outs of the show and his life. And then came the book
signing (see what he wrote for me :)
Oh, and he did answer the most important question on my mind
that day correctly: Scotch or Bourbon? Answer: Bourbon.

We were having flash issues and it caught him off-guard . . . next time I'll charge the batteries better. |
